Today 96% of food products in Uzbekistan are produced domestically

Botschaft Usbekistan, December 29, 2015

Uzbekistan focused on the provision of food security among other priorities yet at the dawn of its independence. The strategic goal was successfully achieved in 20 years. In 1990, the population's need for food, meat, aairy and confectionery products was almost entirely met by imports, while today 96% of food products are produced domestically.

Today, food companies in Uzbekistan produce more than 3,000 various items of foods. Moreover, the list is annually updated by about 80 new domestically produced foods. In order to ensure quality, 363 food companies have introduced IS0-9001 international quality standards and ISO-22000 international quality standards for finished product safety.

In the years since independence, per capita meat consumption has increased 1.3 times, milk and dairy products 1.6 times, and processed fruit and vegetables almost four times. Since the beginning of the current year, the industry’s enterprises have drawn $46.23 million in investments and manufactured products to the tune of 10.1 trillion soums, 16.5 percent up from last year. As many as 1,005 new investment projects worth 291.7 billion soums have been implemented in the industry, thus creating 9,836 new jobs (currency rates of CB RU from 18.11.2015 1$= 2721.12 soums).

Today, the national food industry is facing new tasks and challenges. Changes in the global food market and the resultant price fluctuations cause serious imbalance in global production, and definitely affect the situation in the domestic market. There is therefore a need to intensify efforts to create capacities on the production of food additives and food chemistry, and ratchet up the production of confectioneries.
