Tourism Committee's Chairman meets UNWTO General-Secretary

One of the biggest international events in tourism - International Tourism Fair FITUR-2017 has ended in Madrid. It was the 37th time for Spain to host this fair. This year the event set a new record, as 9672 companies from 165 countries and regions took part in its work. The State Committee of Uzbekistan on tourism development, the NAC Uzbekistan Airways and other major tour companies represented the delegation from our country.

The Uzbek delegation's participation was more than saturated. For 5 days, from 18 to 22 January, the leadership of the Committee, representatives of tourist companies of our country held a series of fruitful talks with heads of several international organizations, ministries of foreign countries. One of such meetings was held at the headquarters of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), between the Chairman of the Committee Anvar Sharapov and the UNWTO General Secretary Taleb Rifai.

During the talks, they discussed issues of further expansion of cooperation between Uzbekistan and the UNWTO in various areas.

Mr. Rifai said that he had already been informed about the measures the Government of our country is taking towards the development of tourism. With satisfaction he noted a serious attention being paid by the new Head of State towards the development of this industry. He also recalled his visit to Samarkand in 2014 in the framework of the UNWTO conference and expressed hope that the new President will continue the transformations in the economy and the restoration of ancient monuments, initiated by Islam Karimov.

The General-Secretary said that the UNWTO intends to expand cooperation with Uzbekistan in the political and technical assistance in the field of tourism. In particular, the UNWTO is ready to provide assistance in conducting training and retraining of qualified personnel, to provide technical assistance in the field of marketing research and certification.

Mr. Rifai has supported the proposal of Uzbekistan to hold a series of events on an international scale in 2017, revealing and promoting the tourist potential of our country and the Silk Road Program.

He highlighted the role and place of Uzbekistan on the Silk Road – one of the major tourist routes that attracts a large number of tourists from all over the world. Historical cities of Uzbekistan, located in the heart of this route, are of great cultural and architectural heritage in the region. This superiority should be used for the development of tourism and economy of the country, along with careful preservation of the tangible and intangible heritage.

The Chairman of the State Committee A. Sharapov officially invited the General-Secretary to participate in the International tourism exhibition "World of leisure", scheduled for April 2017 in the city of Tashkent.

Mr. T. Rifai said that the UNWTO is ready to continue to assist the Republic of Uzbekistan in the development and reforms of the tourism, the promotion of Uzbekistan as one of the key tourist destinations, holding major events of the UNWTO in Uzbekistan, particularly in Samarkand, Tashkent, Bukhara.

The leadership of the UNWTO also expressed readiness to organize the participation of its experts in international tourism events organized in our country.
